The Red Sox

On the Monday morning after the Sox lost the World Series to the Mets in 1986, I ran into a friend and we looked at each other, trying to come to grips with the absolute depth of woe that we had reached as Sox fans. (That was the time that the Sox blew a two run lead, with two outs and two strikes in the 9th inning of what should have been the winning game. They lost the 7th game the next day — as we all knew they would.)

My friend turned to me, gave me a serious look in the eye and said, "It's better this way. It deepens the experience of being a Red Sox fan".

Which was true.

And now, after the Sox have won the World Series TWICE, it is almost comforting to have them return to a state of soap-opera disaster. These are the Sox that we all knew, loved, and suffered with. Those series-winning teams were just an anomaly.

Good to be back home.
